What are bite-sized ways to rethink an entire industry? That was the question asked of nearly 2,000 Premier employees at our recent annual Values conference in Charlotte. Their answers might surprise you.
Everything from improving the health of mothers and babies to allowing providers to see a 360° view of their supply chain costs were discussed by employees from 47 states. As a team, we are looking at healthcare transformation from every angle, while remaining focused on our common “why.” As Susan DeVore, our chief executive officer, said, “Premier is about making quality, affordable healthcare available for every man, woman and child in America.”
For me and the majority of Premier employees, that “why” drives us to reach new heights. It is an “ask why, dream big” culture of innovation that is enabling us to challenge the status quo and defy the word impossible when it comes to transforming healthcare.
Dreaming big is something Premier employees do well, in part because most consider what they do their life’s calling, rather than a job. So what can you do to help your organization think about its mission in a fresh way? Here are some approaches the Premier team uses to inform and inspire:
- Give back together: we serve side-by-side at local nonprofits throughout the year. Over 5,500 hours of service was donated during the conference itself in one afternoon. Tasks ranged from renovations at Easter Seals to making picnic tables at Shining Hope Farms.
- Recognize outstanding performance: we honor teams and individuals who go above and beyond, exemplifying our core values; this year nine teams and 16 individuals were recognized. Their accomplishments included identifying a savings of $45M for a member hospital and getting data to members nine days faster and achieving a perfect 5 out of 5 on member satisfaction surveys.
- Talk about innovations: throw ideas around literally and figuratively; we used throwable microphones during conference sessions to spur the exchange of ideas.
